TIPPERARY ALLIANZ CUMANN NA MBUNSCOL REPORT 16thJANUARY BY JOHN MANLEY

posted 16 Jan 2017, 01:06 by Birt Noe

Annual General Meeting Of Munster Primary Schools GAA Board

The Annual General Meeting of the Munster Primary Schools GAA Board (Allianz Cumann na mBunscol, Coiste na Mumhan)  took place in the Horse and Jockey Hotel in Co Tipperary last Friday night. Special guests at the meeting were Liam Lenihan, Leas Cathaoirleach of the Munster Council and Michael Burke, Chairman of the Tipperary County Board. Liam Lenihan, a former primary teacher himself, spoke of the contribution that primary teachers, male and female, have made and continue to make, to the promotion of Gaelic Games. Michael Burke welcomed the delegates to Tipperary. He said that a highlight of Tipperary’s success in winning the 2016 All Ireland was the joy he witnessed when the players brought the Liam McCarthy Cup to the primary schools and the strong memories players had of their formative years playing in competitions organised by Allianz Cumann na mBunscol.

Mr Joe Lyons, Chairman of Coiste na Mumhan, said that there are over a thousand primary schools in Munster and virtually all play in activities organised by Allianz Cumann na mBunscol. He thanked the Munster Council for its support of primary schools games and for its continued support of the Munster GAA Primary Game.

‘Cumann na mBunscol is unique in that we are active in virtually every school, large or small, mixed or single- sex, urban, rural, suburban in the province of Munster and indeed throughout the country. The work of Cumann na mBunscol is hard to quantify but I know it is easy to underestimate. It survives on the goodwill, commitment and dedication of teachers, young and not so young. And let’s not forget our retired colleagues who give invaluable assistance when we are at our busiest,’ said Mr Lyons.

Joe Lyons, who is Principal of Ballybrown NS, was re elected as Chairman for another year while Brother James Dormer was re elected as Development Officer. Aodán Wrenn, a native of Shanagolden, was returned as PRO. Aodán teaches in Clerihan NS, outside Clonmel and is Rúnaí of  Allianz Cumann na mBunscol in Tipperary.

Niamh O Dea and Ruairi Walsh, who teach in St Paul’s NS in Dooradoyle, were Limerick delegates. Eamon Fitzgerald, a native of Kilfinny, was a delegate representing Waterford. Eamon is a long-serving stalwart of  Allianz  Cumann na mBunscol in Waterford and is a stalwart of the De La Salle club in the city.

MOYCARKEY N.S. V. RATHKEEVIN N.S. U-13 LADIES FOOTBALL ROINN A

On Thursday 6th October 2016, Moycarkey N.S. had their first ladies football match of the year. They took on a skilful Rathkeevin N.S. side in Roinn A of the Under 13 Ladies football. The match took place in New Inn with ideal weather conditions for amazing football to be played. Rathkeevin had a brilliant start as they were in front of their markers for every ball early on and they quickly picked up a 3 point lead. Moycarkey finally got on the scoreboard near the end of the first half when Ellen Maher went around her marker and popped the ball over the bar after a fantastic pass from Orlaith Ryan. The score at half time saw Rathkeevin leading by 2 points on a score line of 3 points to 1.Moycarkey controlled possession in the second half and turned the possession into a goal thanks to Caoimhe O’ Sullivan’s outstanding strike. Moycarkey continued to pile on the pressure looking for another goal and it arrived shortly after the first thanks to Lucy Purcell. Rathkeevin never gave up but they were up against a powerful defence in the shape of Lucy O’ Keeffe in goal and Shauna Flanagan, Mia O’ Meara and Kate Dowling in the backs. Caoimhe Fitzgibbon also played excellently when brought on. At the final whistle it was a joyful win for the ladies of Moycarkey with the final score being 2-1 to 0-3. Everyone played their part with both Kate O’ Keeffe and her replacement Aoife Maher having notable performances as well as Shakira Donoghue who never stopped running in midfield. The Moycarkey team now look forward to playing against Ballylooby in their next match. By Ellen Maher (Moycarkey N.S. - 5th class).

ALL IRELAND CUP VISITS

The County Board Officers met with SH manager Michael Ryan and Games Development personnel this week to discuss All Ireland Cup visits. Conscious that all our senior inter county players are in full time work or colleges, their availability will be very much confined to their own local area.

Based on this the following is the procedure for club and school cup visits;

  • Clubs must first discuss a visit to your local schools with the local Co Games Development Administrator (GDA) as they have the responsibility of co-ordinating cup visits for clubs and schools.
  • Priority will be given to clubs and schools who had players involved in either All Ireland SH or MH panels but the onus will be on those clubs and schools to have their own local county players available so a date will have to be selected to suit them.
  • The Games Development Officers will sit down on a weekly basis and plan the schedule of visits for the following few weeks based on expressions of interest.
  • Clubs without a member on the panels may avail of a cup only visit, but the onus is on the club to secure the services of a panel member to accompany the cup if they are in a position to do so.

MOUTHGUARDS

As the football season begins schools are reminded of the importance of mudguards for all children participating in Cumann na mBunscol matches. Both boys and girls playing in Tipperary Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Gaelic Football fixtures must wear mouth guards without exception at all times. It would be advised that schools would also use mouth guards when training to allow children to get used to using them and to follow best practice.

REPORTER OF THE WEEK

Schools are reminded and encouraged to send news and updates of their progress in the football championships for the coming season. Reports can be a great writing topic for the classroom and are an opportunity for children to see their work published for a wider audience. In the pre-season championship build-up children could be given the chance to tell about their own training regiments and tips for the coming championship. A Reporter of the Week will be chosen and their work included in the weekly report. Please ensure all reports are a single paragraph in Verdana 10 type. All submissions should be proof-read by the teacher before submission.

MOYCARKEY N.S. VERSUS POWERSTOWN N.S.

On Wednesday 21st of September Moycarkey NS U-13 football team played our first game in the Tipperary Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Roinn B championship against a powerful Powerstown N.S. in Leahy Park, Cashel.  The weather was gloomy and miserable but the football on show was exhilarating from both teams. From the throw in Powerstown took control and quickly gathered up three points. Despite strong and tough defensive play from Orlaith Ryan and Mia O’ Meara in the backline, Powerstown added a magnificent goal midway through the first half. The moving of Frankie Butler and Bill Flanagan to the defence from attack gave Moycarkey much needed extra force. Some spectacular saves from Jamie O’ Mahoney in the Moycarkey goal and with the help of Caoimhe O’ Sullivan, Patrick Dowling and Shakira Donoghue in the backs the Moycarkey team kept Powerstown from scoring any more goals. At the end of the first half the Moycarkey forwards looked more dangerous and this boded well for the second half. At half time Powerstown had a well-deserved lead of 1-8 to 0-0 but Moycarkey weren’t giving up! Moycarkey were much better in the second half and after some good work from Oisín Martin and Ellen Maher in midfield Seán Flanagan scored Moycarkey’s first point of the game. Some fantastic skill from Martin Ivers led to Seán’s second point of the game shortly after. A brilliant pass from Ronan O’ Dwyer set up Seán to score a goal from way out the field with a dipping shot. Moycarkey were on a roll! The rest of the game was very exciting with both teams trying their absolute best. In the end Powerstown had a 7 point victory on a score line of 1-9 to 1-2. Moycarkey can be very proud of their performance, especially the second half. Powerstown were worthy winners on the day. Congratulations to both teams on a thrilling game. By Ellen Maher.
