Success for Grange NS At INTO 7’s Ladies Football

Seven teams participated in the Blitz held in ideal weather conditions at Grange Community Field.  Ardfinnan, Clerihan and Gaelscoil Cluain Meala were in section 2.  Clerihan played impressively winning both their games to qualify for the group final. In section 1 Ballylooby, Ballyporeen, Our Lady of Mercy School, Cahir and Grange were in opposition. The key game in this section was between old rivals Grange and Ballylooby who had both won their   games impressively in rounds 1 and 2.  Grange got off to a great start with two goals to leave the half time score at 3 – 1 to 1-2.  While Ballylooby increased the pressure in the 2nd half Grange took their scoring opportunities and held their lead to win by 5-3 to 2-3. The final match between Clerihan and Grange was a very entertaining game.  Both teams were fatigued but ran hopefully out onto the pitch for the final of Blitz 1 after winning their respective sections outright. Grange started strongly with a goal from forward Orla Keating after a beautiful high pass from Aoife O’Shaughnessy.  Clerihan’s Eileen Flannery fought back but was unsuccessful at landing any points on the board.  Kirsty Crotty Ryan scored two lovely goals giving Grange a three goal lead going into half time. After a short break Yvonne Keating sent a ball soaring over the bar for Grange.  Clerihan came back strongly and landed a beautiful point.  Kailee Burke from Grange responded with a goal and scored Grange’s fourth goal to win the final.  Grange were the stronger team and emerged as group winners on a score line of 4-1 to 0-1. Grange now qualify for the county final along with 5 other teams. The final will be played in April, on date to be confirmed.  The county champions are guaranteed to have at least one player selected to play in Croke Park during either the All-Ireland Football semi-final or final.  What a great honour that would be.  Well done to Grange and to all the teams who participated and showed such a high level of football skills and enthusiasm. Co-ordinator Mr. O’Slatara thanked all the teams and their managers, especially Ms. Smith (Grange) and Ms O’Connell (Clerihan), for reaching the final.  Many thanks to all the sponsors, children in the school, parents, families, friends and teachers who supported the girls on the day.  Thanks to Rosaleen O’Leary for arranging the matches, secretary, Grange N.S. and supporting the girls. A special word of thanks to referees Derek O’Mahoney, Frankie O’Brien and Martin Doyle. Thanks also to Paddy Noonan for laying out the field and to the Grange Development Association for the use of the Community Field. Grange Team:  Kailee Burke, Alison Condon, Kirsty Crotty Ryan, Jamie Guthrie, Aoife Keating, Orla Keating, Yvonne Keating, Jordan Kirwan, Aoife O’Farrell, Aoife O’Shaughnessy. Clerihan Team:  Rachel Browne, Andrea Carroll, Lily Clements, Hollie Corcoran, Emma Cronin, Rosie Fitzgerald, Mairéad O’Donnell, Aisling Walsh and Emily Whyte.

First Round Win for Clerihan N.S Under 13 Hurlers By Aodan Wrenn

Clerihan N.S Under 13 Hurlers began their Roinn D 2011 Cumann na mBunscol Hurling Championship with a win over a dogged Ardfinnan team, in Ardfinnan, on Thursday March 31st.It was a very tough game for Clerihan, and they were put to the pin of their collar to narrowly edge out Ardfinnan. The first half was even, with very little to separate two good teams. Clerihan went in at half time leading by 2 points 2-1 to 1-2. Clerihan would be against the breeze in the second half. However in the second half Clerihan began to play with a lot more fluency, and got some excellent scores. Ardfinnan were very brave in their attempts to stem the tide. They too got lovely score to keep the game very competitive right up to the final whistle. In the end though Clerihan had enough good hurling played in the second half to see them win the day. The final score was Clerihan 4-8 Ardfinnan 2-7. Clerihan had some very strong performers throughout the game but especial heroes were Aaron Condon, Alan O'Donnell, Sean Maher, Luke Hahessy and Aidan Lyons. Eoin Power, in goals, made some vital saves to help Clerihan on their way. Clerihan have a lot of work to do, and the young boys know that the games will be getting harder and harder over the coming weeks. There will be an awful lot of hard work done in the school yard, school hall and GAA field in Clerihan, over the next few weeks! However, for today, it's a job well done for Clerihan, and the first hurdle cleared. Next up for the Under 13s is Knockavilla, in 2 weeks time. Clerihan lined out as follows: Eoin Power, Aidan Lyons, Sean Maher, Alan O'Donnell, Evan Corcoran, Aaron Condon, Aidan Phelan, Jack Burke, Luke Hahessy, Shane Hickey, Dean O’Dwyer. Daniel Fitzpatrick, Ben Keating Hogan, Daniel Browne, Jason McCully, Shane Buckley. Ardfinnan: John Coveney, Padraig Cunningham, John Condon, James Condon, Oisin Ryan, Michael Barlow, Jack Doyle, Robert Condon, Daniel Cunningham, Alan Walsh, Mark Kelly, Darragh O'Leary, Darragh O'Brien, Sean Doyle, Michael Cunningham. We would like to wish Ardfinnan all the best for the rest of the Championship. They are a very good team. Thanks to Willie Barrett for refereeing the game to his usual high standard. Thanks to the Ardfinnan club for allowing us use their pitch, and to Liam Sullivan (Ardfinnan N.S) for granting Clerihan N.S such a warm welcome in Ardfinnan.
