Allianz Cumann na mBunscol County Finals Review 2011 By Secretary Aodan Wrenn

The Cumann na mBunscol County Finals took place on Tuesday and Wednesday June 14th and 15th, in Semple Stadium Thurles. The sun shone throughout both days, and the quality of hurling and camogie on view was top quality. There were so many highlights over the two days that it would be difficult to write about all of them. The best matches on view were: the u13 A hurling final between Holycross and Scoil Ailbhe, the Under 13 B Hurling final between Cashel and Templemore, the Under 13 C Final between Loughmore and Kilruane, the Under 11 D Hurling final between Boherlahan and Ballytarsna, the Under 11 C Camogie final between Carrig Birr and Cashel GNS, the Under 11 A Hurling final between Scoil Ailbhe and Holycross, the Under 11 B Camogie final between Upperchurch and Boherlahan. The quality of the play in these and other finals was terrific. They were exciting matches that were illuminated by awesome hurling. The standard of play over the two days was extremely high. The quality of hooking, blocking, striking, catching and first touch was excellent. There were so many players who stood out, and looked like superstars of the future. I am certain that a huge percentage of those boys and girls playing on both days will play for Tipperary Hurling and Camogie teams in the future. We had a few celebrities in the Stadium who came in to watch the action. Liam Sheedy was present to watch his daughter play for Portroe in the u13 B Camogie final. Eoin Kelly came in to watch Mullinahone in the u13 D Hurling final. Noel McGrath was there to watch his younger brother Brian play for Loughmore in the Hurling Roinn C Final. I must say that Brian put in a fantastic performance in that match. He is certainly going to be a hurling superstar in years to come. Tipperary senior manager Declan Ryan was with Ballagh N.S on the sideline as a mentor. That was great to see. We were also treated to a visit by a certain Liam McCarthy. Tipperary Secretary Tim Floyd brought Liam down to pitch-side for a while. It was great to have our good friend Liam with us in the Stadium, and hopefully he'll come back next year to pay us a visit!! All in all the County Finals were a great success. The children seemed to enjoy the occasion, and we hope they all take away great memories of playing in the Cathedral of Hurling and the Field of Dreams, Semple Stadium.
I'd like to finish by thanking everyone who made the 2 days so special. Sincere thanks to Andy Ryan, GDA in Mid Tipperary, for all his great work and co-operation. Sincere thanks to the 10 young transition year students who umpired, did linesmen and worked the electronic scoreboard. Their work is sincerely appreciated by Cumann na mBunscol. Thanks to GDAs Tadhg O'Connor and Kevin Halley. Also to Dinny Maher, Tipperary Coaching and Games. We would like to thank Jimmy Purcell, Andy O'Gorman and Philly Butler, the groundsmen, for their tireless work over the 2 days, and over many years. They ensured all schools got their dressing rooms and ensured they were looked after well. They were a brilliant help to us. Thanks to Michael Trehy for working on the DVDs of all the matches. Thanks to the referees who made the games possible: Fergal Horgan, Christy McLoughlin and Mark Generry. They refereed the games with calmed assurance, and common sense. Thanks to John Manley, Jerry McDonnell and Brian Boyle, the officers of Cumann na mBunscol. They worked so hard over the 2 days and they ensured everything worked out smoothly. Their work is greatly appreciated by all the teachers. They give so much to Cumann na mBunscol. We are greatly indebted to them.
I hope all the teachers enjoy the Summer Holidays, and we'll see you all back in September for the Football Championship.
