Busy and Exciting GAA Period for Clerihan N.S By Aodan Wrenn

The past few weeks have been a very busy GAA period for Clerihan N.S.

The Under 11 ladies footballers performed excellently in the blitz in Grange where they reached the blitz final against Ballylooby. They lost narrowly against Ballylooby, having beaten Rosegreen and Grange in their earlier matches.

The Under 13 ladies footballers were knocked out of the Roinn B Championship but performed excellently in their three games. They lost narrowly to Rathkeevin and Grange, before beating Ardfinnan in their last game.

The Under 13 boys footballers competed in Roinn C, the highest grade the school has ever competed in. In the first round Gaelscoil Clonmel came to Clerihan, and were magnificent. They outplayed Clerihan, and won out by 11 points in the end. This was a big disappointment for everyone connected with Clerihan but we were determined to come back strong against Killenaule in the next game. This was a do or die match. The winner was into the semi final. The loser was out. Simple as that. Clerihan played with the wind in the first half and led by 8 points to no score at half time. Five minutes into the second half the match looked to be over as Clerihan scored a goal to put them 1-9 to 0-1 in command. Eleven points up with 15 minutes to go. What happened next was extraordinary. Killenaule staged one of the greatest fightbacks you are likely to see. Once they scored their first goal it appeared like a dam had burst and the goals and points started to flow for them. Clerihan were shell-shocked. They couldnt respond as Killenaule kept coming and coming. With two minutes left Killenaule got the winning goal. Clerihan were out. The final score was Killenaule 4-3 Clerihan 1-9. Everyone connected with the team was very disappointed. For only the second time in 8 years Clerihan wouldn't be contesting an Under 13 Football County Semi Final.

The following day in Moyle Rovers the Under 11 Roinn B Blitz took place. Clerihan, Moyglass, Gaelscoil Clonmel and Grange were competing. Whichever team would win this blitz would go on to play in the Under 11 B County Final on November 18th. Clerihan beat Grange in the first game 2-3 to 0-4. In the second game Clerihan beat Gaelscoil Clonmel 3-3 to 1-1. In the final game Clerihan beat Moyglass 7-1 to 1-1. Clerihan had won the blitz and qualified for the County Final. It was a great day for the school. On November 18th Clerihan will play Gaelscoil Durlas in the Roinn B Under 11 County Football Final. The venue and time has yet to be confirmed. We wish the young lads in Clerihan all the best for the big day. Go n-eiri libh!
