St Colmcille’s v Nenagh CBS   22 April 12

On Monday 22nd of April St Colmcille’s PS, Templemore and Nenagh CBS locked horns in the first round of the Cumman na mBunscoil U13A Hurling Championship. Bishop Quinlan Park, Borrisoleigh was the setting for this epic encounter, even if the score-line didn’t suggest so.

St Colmcille’s started with the aid of a strong breeze but it took them a while to settle into their rhythm. Wasteful shooting and the sterling efforts from a Nenagh CBS defense, led by Barry Coffey kept them at bay. At the other end Ciarán Hoctor and Ben Collins were star performers in a hell’s kitchen like defensive unit. Nick Keane broke the deadlock with an accurately struck free and it proved to be the only flag raised in the opening half.

At half time both teams received words of encouragement from their respective teachers. The second half started in a welter of excitement and three quick fire points from super sub Ali Aissou, Martin Bergin and another Nick Keane free seemed to sway the tie in Templemore’s favour. Barry Coffey struck two amazing long range frees to keep Nenagh CBS firmly in the hunt. As time ticked by the Nenagh CBS forward line piled on the pressure but the back-line from Templemore stood firm and did not falter.

Referee Seamus Tynan blew the final whistle to the relief of the Colmcille’s brigade who had definitely got out of jail. The final score read St. Colmcille’s, Templemore 0-4, Nenagh CBS 0-2. Scoil Ailbhe lie in wait in the long grass for both teams, surely the bookies favourites to top the group and claim back to back titles in June.
